"Cookies" are small data files stored on a website users PC, and may have a variety of uses.
The "EU Cookie Directive" requires that users must give permission for a website to store cookies. There are exceptions where the cookie is an essential part of delivering a service, and the main thrust of the legislation seems to be to allow site users to opt out from intrusive "tracking cookies" that allow website operators or third parties to record the browsing habits of users or other non-essential cookies.
The SJTAG forums make use of two types of cookie:
- Session cookies: These apply to both guests and registered users, and allow the forum software to indicate which threads you have already visited, etc. These are considered to be an essential part of delivering the phpBB forum service and are therefore exempted from the legislation (see phpBB Community Discussion - http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 5&start=45). Session cookies expire as soon as you close your browser, although the files may remain on your PC.
The cookies used here are: phpbb3_sjtag_304_u, phpbb3_sjtag_304_k and phpbb3_sjtag_304_sid.
- Persistent cookies: When logging in, a user may elect to have the forum "remember" his login details. This is non-essential and so requires the user to opt-in under the terms of the legislation. If you do not wish the SJTAG forum to save a persistent cookie then do not check the "Log me on automatically each visit" checkbox when you sign in. By default, this option is unchecked. The login cookie will automatically expire after 30 days after which you will need to sign in and re-set the automatic log on.
The cookie used here is style_cookie.
